How can you gain the trust of dementia patients at home?

It's a BIG challenge- Establishing trust and maintaining relationships with individuals living with dementia can be a complex task. However, with a thoughtful and professional approach coupled with empathy and an understanding of the individual’s unique needs, it is possible to create a positive and supportive environment in a home setting. Effective communication is crucial to achieving this end and is an essential tool in building trust.

By utilising appropriate communication strategies, such as active listening, using simple language, and allowing sufficient time for responses, carers/caregivers can facilitate meaningful interactions and foster a sense of trust and security within the individual with dementia. With patience, compassion, and a commitment to building lasting relationships, caregivers can successfully navigate the challenges of caring for those with dementia in the home environment.

Please find a few handy tips from carers and caregivers that have been used to build trust and maintain a relationship with dementia patients.

Voice:

To begin, use a calm and smooth voice and adjust your pitch to their hearing.

Approach:

Always approach from the front; a calm, clear voice can go a long way.

Other Communication techniques:

Use a communication board, photos, and hand signs if possible to improve dementia care at home.

Lots of Hugs:

Provide as much comfort as possible. This simple deed alleviates the dementia patients' worry and concerns about trusting and believing you.

Corrections - No! No!! No!!!

Avoid corrections and debates. This can generate anxiety and stress; however, reacting to their discussion by demonstrating empathy and engaging in direct eye contact dialogues with dementia sufferers may aid in the development of trust.

Using the above approaches and techniques helps build confidence and trust to build a relationship with a person with dementia.
